I arrived in Blackpool by coach from London on a chilly September afternoon in 1979. We took the coach from London and stopped over at Woking to drop some other students there first before proceeding north-west to Blackpool.
If memory serves me right, there were fifteen of us. Our first stop was the College at Ashfield Road to report to the Overseas Students Coordinator. From there some of us were taken to a hotel (bed& breakfast) called the Marlowe Hotel, at No. 12, Pleasant Street.
We stayed there for a couple of nights at before we could move into our own rented flats yang dicarikan oleh the College officers.
Saya tinggal di No. 4 CheltenhamRd. bersama Safie, Hussein dan Farouk. College pilih rumah ini kerana dari sini mudah untuk ambil bas ke college. Apparently, as I discovered during the recent gathering, some of our super-seniors pun tinggal di Shafstbury Ave. juga.
Nak share sikit kenangan fasal rumah masa first year. Mula2 duduk rumah yang college sediakan,tapi selalu tertinggal bus dan bus pula infrequent.Lepas sebulan pindah rumah di bandar.Masaalah bus selesai masaalah lain pula timbul....selalu kena kejar dengan anjing landlady bila nak ambil surat. Kena guna payung picit doorbell lepas tu lari ke atas sorok belakang pintu tunggu landlady bagi surat.One of us pernah kena kejar sampai tingkat atas.A few months later pindahlah kami ke rumah lain yang tak ada apa2 masaalah.
ReplyDeleteMasa mula2 sampai ke rumah yang di sediakan college seronok sangat sebab ada colour tv;maklumlah di malaysia belum ada.Di Malaysia masih black n white pada tahun 78 tu.Tahun 79 baru Malaysia ada siaran colour.Agak culture shock jugalah tengok siaran tv British ni.Siri yang hot masa tu ialah Dallas.Surat khabar British pun buat terkejut juga, banyak betul cabaran...Tahun 79 revolusi Islam di Iran.Angin Islam juga di rasai oleh pelajar Islam di UK.Sisters yang bertudung paling merasai tempias nya.Sarcasm dari pensyarah dan ada juga verbal harassment dari pelajar English tapi overall ok.

ReplyDeleteAlhamdulillah,di tempatkan belajar di Blackpool adalah satu rahmat.Terima Kasih kepada sisters dan brothers yang membimbing kami.Tanpa tunjuk ajar mungkin kehidupan kami jauh menyimpang.Melawat teman2 di serata tempat di England dan Wales menyedarkan kami betapa tanpa ilmu,kasih sayang dan pengawasan,begitu mudah terjerumus ke arah gejala pergaulan bebas dan perkara haram.Pengalaman pertama kali menghadiri Winter Islamic Conference Swanwick Derbyshire membuka mata bahawa 'Islam Itu Indah'.Terima Kasih atas segalanya.
